This month, we’re collaborating with WTJU (@wtjuradio) for a pop-up exhibition as part of the Dreaming Charlottesville series in the Odd Little Museum. Starting October 14, the exhibition is available for viewing through to mid-November 2022. All Dreaming Charlottesville exhibitions are open Monday - Thursday, 10-5PM and Friday 10-9PM. Learn more about how to go view it on their website.
About the exhibition
Bad Milk Press (formerly Feminist Union of Charlottesville Creatives) asserts that a vibrant and thriving DIY publishing scene is key to making Charlottesville a better place. Creating, publishing, and distributing print media is a low-cost way to uplift community voices and widely distribute the work of emerging artists. Having access to media that is not influenced by advertising revenue is incredibly important to retaining and defining our shared values as we dare to dream of, and pursue, a better world. We believe that all art is inherently political and has the power to reshape society. We believe that authentic creation is a radical act, even more so when it is shared with others.
MALA LECHE, a quarterly radical art zine based in Central Virginia, was born out of this vision of solidarity. The zine features the art and writing of women, non-binary, and genderqueer artists and thinkers. This growing zine shares a vision of an equitable, compassionate, and radical future, defined by the harmony of a chorus of diverse, creative voices. Through paid contributor opportunities, shared curatorial control, and a belief in the power of creative work, MALA LECHE creates impactful and necessary change in the community.
This exhibition showcases an immersive room lined with past issues of MALA LECHE and includes QR codes to listen to audio about MALA LECHE’s development from a self-funded endeavor into a sustainable community project with the continued allyship of local organizations and supporting community members. The exhibition also features the work of past Guest Editors, including Meesha Goldberg (@meeshagoldberg), Kori Price (@koripricephotography), Jess Walters (@art_by_jesswalters). Be sure to bring some headphones along to listen to the audio components of this exhibit! Audio links are also listed below for those of you listening along at home.
The physical exhibition installation was made possible with the generous assistance of Jess Walters and Avery Cousins. Thank you!
